Well. I don't like him at all, lol.

He's a poor replacement for the Dutchman who wants to build a lovely cabin in the woods and have babies.

Maybe he's the other dude? Or was she a serial letter writer? Maybe she just likes guys.

I don't know, but according to the letter, they were together at least once "looking for moonlight."

So she lives in Rexmont (which is in eastern Pennsylvania if I am not mistaken.) I wonder if Hermie lived there too (when home from "the war.)

I wonder whether his mention of "hospital" meant he was on list of local men who were injured and were being treated close to home. Sam and Helene weren't particularly close before the war, I gather.

My thoughts are Sam might be a relative, perhaps a cousin...he asks her to say hi to relatives.

I bet young women were often asked to volunteer, perhaps by the Red Cross(?), to write to servicemen who requested it.

But why would he say "Yes I remember who you are."?

Maybe they were asked to write to local boys.

Or classmates? I remember something like that. Maybe those guys kept her letters, but she ended up marrying the mailman! (LOL) There were penpal requests for young women to write servicemen right into Viet Nam.

A couple I went to church with for years, Al and Kay met because Kay wrote a letter to "a soldier" in Nam, and Al got it. She was about 16 and they got married when he got home. Kay was 18 and Al was 21. Together for 30+ years when I knew them and staying that way.

I was thinking this as well.
Beautiful penmanship from both Herm and especially Sam.

Ok, so they are familiar to one another. I wonder if she went to a sister school (all girls) or like some suggested a relative. Comparing to modern times with soldiers now I am wondering if she was part of a local pen pal writing program that insures soldiers get mail, similar to what some groups did with soldiers recently to keep their spirits up. I agree Stracci such beautiful penmanship!
