    Ladybranch,

True ancient oil lamps did not have adjustable wicks - just twisted rushes or twisted fabric wicks inserted into the oil via the hole. And since the oil used was usually olive oil or some other organic oil, they burned slow but smokey.

If a true ancient, it is really little more than an elaboration of the simple clay lamps excavated from ancient ruins. There are mentions of, and mosaic depictions of, multi-arm bronze lamps from the period, but I can't seem to locate one right now - well, not totally true, the only one I have a photo of was made to "honor" Pirapus in a mosiac in Pompeii - and I'm danged if I can find the book right now (Eros in Pompeii)

Still not convinced that this is true to the period

I suppose if it were a church lamp a canon might light it.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Just getting to this thread. I like the idea of seeing a picture of it hanging somewhere, if that can be done.

Hello, this is 19-20th century oil lamp, after roman lamp found in Pompeii, made probably in Naples foundry. I am collecting similar items and I would like to buy it.
