Also note the man on the right appears to be holding a pistol in his hand. Staged?

I'm not sure. I think it is the balancing rock from CO. But I think it's much earlier than the other photos pictured.

    Two Things:

    1) The number at the bottom corner "burned" into the photograph is lower than any other on the photos comparisons.

    2) There is no back stamp of Georke & Son etc.

I'm guessing, partially staged photograph by the son Curt, prior it to it becoming a "tourist" attraction, of two passing through Cowboys.

I have not seen a single other Cowboy staged photo, so I don't think he staged it in that sense.

Here is an interesting image Dated to C.1870-1880 of the rock, landscape looking a little better $_57.JPG

They are both the same rock, just different time-frames and angles. No doubt at all.

Pat - the key is to compare the cowboy photo and the color photo Scantic found. If your scroll up to the post with the card and then down a few posts to the color one, look at the pointy end of the rock on the right side. Shape and grooves in it are identical.

The other pictures were taken from a different angle and a different side of the rock, and after Paul cut the steps into the surrounding rock on that other side. Gets the people closer to the rock than the cowboy is too.

As for the trees, look behind the cowboy on the left. That looks like a typical Christmas tree type of pine shape.

I vote for "same rock." Look for single features or small groups of identifiable features on "old" rock pic and you will find same ones on "new" rock.

If the surroundings look too different, then some prankster musta moved the rock when no one was looking. You are looking at the same side of same rock tho, I guarantee it.

At one time, I'd have said these rocks will never move. After the Old Man of the Mountains in NH fell, I changed my mind. Some day, this may roll over!

Too right! I couldn't believe that happened. If I ever look at this rock, it is going to be from a mile away!

I hear that today this rock is cemented into place, to avoid such a thing. :)

Baker - I think you are right.
When I opened the two pictures side by side I could see the details in the rock better. Rather than being distracted by the surroundings and the base.

Horses will usually doze when mounted while folks stop to chat on a trail, etc. unless of course they are high strung. :p

Hmmmm.... I don't always look at this Militaria category very quickly since I know nothing about the items. Eventually check it, though. Too bad I missed this nice photo discussion until it was over.
