I'm going to try that. I usually use prepared mustard but always keep mustard powder on hand for baked beans.

    I know this is off-topic but . . .

What was the bright blue medicine used many years ago for scrapes and cuts on kids?

That stuff stayed bright blue on a kid's skin for a long time. One of my aunts used it on all of her kids (she had three boys). That blue stuff took forever to fade off my male cousins' skin. My aunt might as well have tattooed some horrible design in garish colors on each bump, scrape, and laceration those three rambunctious boys had.

    Hi,
I do not remember blue but I do remember a purple. It was tinture of violet aka gentian violet. It was used on cuts and scrapes. It was a dye but it killed bacteria and fungus. We used it a lot to treat thrush (yeast infection in your throat) and your "whoo whoo". It stained everything. It is used now in wound centers for leg ulcerations and I believe it is blue.

I saw that type and color in my searches. I suspect this one is a version of it.

Thanks, Gregsglass. It may have been purple. I just know it was so noticeable. And the gentian violet might make sense because my aunt was a nurse (and then a nanny in D.C.) before she married "later in life" as they used to say. I have a great old photo of her in a park with two young children in a pram and she's dressed in her nurse/nanny outfit (cape, hat, and all).

Gentian's Violet, Mercurochrome, and Iodine. They all came in bottles with glass rods attached to the lid. Iodine would stain for a long time.

Iodine hurt more than the original scrape or cut!!! Oweeee!

And Vicks was (and still is) the very best for unclogging chests, sinuses, etc. One put some on the chest, some on the back, and a swish under the nose. Then a cloth diaper was pinned round the neck, and a flannel nightgown on top. I still have some of those gauzy Curity diapers for the same purpose. :)

    Hi Silver,
I still have those diapers also, only I use them to polish furniture and refinishing and staining furiture. 100% cotton and lint free you can not ask for better.

Mustard ladles/spoons (usually referred to in old catalogs as 'spoons', even if ladle form) typically range from a bit under 4" to around 5½", the bowl is quite small as on this piece - mayonnaise ladles/spoons are typically around 5" to 6", and are more substantial pieces with larger bowls.

Yep. I have a collection of more than 2 dozen of them, sadly all still packed away since my move.

If you don't have Vicks, the blue sore joint gels like Icy Hot are almost as good. One of my cats runs when he sees me get the jar of Icy Hot out. He hates the smell.

Reddish-orange on my skin. If we'd had Goth back in the 50s I could see us all using it to make tats on our arms and legs! Hahaha!
