Yeah I agree with @verybrad that is very very similar. The top looks so similar, the smoothness of the edges, the way the top slides over, the colour of the timber, the size, the construction of the corner joins (what i can see anyway). My feeling is you might have nailed it and that is what my one is. Yes that would explain the plywood base.
I think this is it. Are you still suspicious about the legs on mine? I agree they are in good condition. But I never got a 'new' vibe from them. But then again I am a newbie to antiques.
My question is does the 'top' (that sits under the 'lid') look like its been cut out? I.e. the part that would have had a hole in it for the basin. Can you see evidence that its been cut out? EDIT I found my one thanks to @TallCakes tip off. This one for sale has the bowl still there and same legs. So the mystery is solved. It is Victorian @verybrad was right about the age. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/114573582890
Yes, it’s a bidet missing its porcelain insert. Probably French, mid 19th Century. I have one that’s similar, and it’s from 1830. Different legs though. In the US Midwest I’d put the value at around $300-$400…WITH the porcelain insert. Without it the value would be fairly minimal, though the build quality is good.
Well there is one for sale on ebay with the insert for 85 UK pounds. I paid $60 Australian Dollars ($40USD) so I feel that wasnt too bad. I use it every day as a mini table for eating bowls of yoghurt while sitting in my armchair. Then the rest of the time it is a foot rest (ottoman) for when I am in my armchair.
