Re. The crest… it may very well be…to the right eye…I’ve done some googling…including the v crescent…but so far nothing.

I think it’s a matter or the right person seeing it…for ID.

Again, thank you all…this seems to be a nice community!

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Here is a good link to look for characteristics of ancient mythological creatures:

    https://www.theoi.com/greek-mythology/bestiary.html

I did some perusing and was not able to find a creature with all of the characteristics of yours. Granted, the list is long and I probably missed something.

As a guess, this could be a creature that was made up. A griffin has the head of an eagle, and this does not. Also, it has the claws of a lion, and this does not. So it's not accurate for griffin, but perhaps that is what they were going for? I haven't been able to find anything similar to a griffin, but with hooves.

Could it be a winged Qilin dragon?
If you google that search term lots come up with cloven hooves.
Yours is just a smooth coated dog like variety!

Interesting beast -- I never heard of it. Does seem to have more of the attributes than anything I saw the other day.

    One last bump...

Deeply appreciate all the posts/interest so far.

I think we've determined the following...

    It's likely cast spelter
It's pretty unique as far as the head/body/feet combo.
Its hooves are definitely of the cloven variety

Unfortunately, we still don't know quite what it is or what it was a part of...

Bumping for the last time as there's others that need help too.

    Hi Mark,

Your creature is most likely used to be a part of a fireplace accessories called (andirons or morrilos). Andirons were metal stand, typically one of a pair, for supporting wood burning in a fireplace. Metal rings were probably connected by a chain for security and decorative purposes. In one advertisement they are called “fireplace heaters” but the photos of the reverse sides of these pair proved them to be part of andirons. Please check all photos.

    Please check following links:

    Examples of andirons/morrilos:

So it must be a missing friend for your creature somewhere :)

    Wow….Wanderer….makes perfect sense!!!

this link you provided pretty much seals it for me: https://www.pamono.com.au/winged-lions-fireplace-figures-set-of-2

Of course, further discussion and thoughts welcomed…but, just want to say Thank You to all for your time and thoughts….I could definitely see how antiques can be as much of a rabbit hole as Hi end audio. Both pleasurable and probably sometimes maddening.

p.s. This forum seems so much more thoughtful and civil than the audio equipment forum I frequent ; )
