Like if you were painting and you’d apply painters tape around a medallion you wanted to paint a different color than the surrounding area. It’s not an applied plaque so if it’s a different color there must have been some trick used to achieve it. Usually on these gold filled pieces there is a spot or two you can see a worn down dull looking area. Sometimes just a little scrape or something that eventually through wear became big enough to notice. Like when you’re looking at a gold filled pocket watch. Sometimes you swear you’re looking at a solid gold case.
