    marks....the finish....how it was fired.....CRACKS......glaze......

    How well the bottom is finished.
    Color of clay.
    Whether it is glazed and has kiln marks.
    Possible incised marks.

    left. cut with a wire off the potter's wheel. no time for polishing. normally older. mass-produced.

    right. more modern.

    the brownies here might even be halfware - a long tube pre-turned, cut, bottom and top added by hand.
    on the continent the working with cutting wire died out around the 1920s to 1930s.
