I took some photos under 30x loupe, do you see any red flags please? To my untrained eyes I saw a lot bits and bobs but no typical round bubbles 1.jpg 2.jpg 3.jpg

Garnets are 6.5-7.5, regular glass 5-6.5, so there is a slight overlap. You could still give it a try, if they test as 7.5 they're garnets. If they test under 6.5 they're glass.;)

Difficult to tell from a blurry photos, but it looks like there are inclusions that garnets also have. But as I said, the photos are blurry.:(

I just tried, all three samples-this brooch, a known garnet pendant, and a glass box - gave me the same number of bar slots, the only noticable difference is that the extra bar would die out more slowly on my glass box when the needle left the surface:hungover:

This one may look better, you can see a transparent irregular shape there 1.jpg

Which could mean either, cut glass can also have a transparent irregular shape. It also looks like the two top ones have bubbles, but it could be different in real life.

It's where there was a gold star.

Hmmm, okay, but I'm sure there's no signature round bubbles within those stones, and given that other two examples were made with real garnet...I'll probably wait for seller's reply!

Btw if they're indeed pastes I assume the colour should be more consistent?

If they were glass, odds on they'd all be identical. Minus the bubbles. Identical cut/color anyway. From here it looks like garnets.

True, and the maker seems to only be famous for his green paste:angelic:

    I see almandine garnets:cyclops:
In Debora's comment, the advertisement says he worked with rosecut diamonds and semiprecious stones!

Yeah, though I haven't seen any examples with non-paste stones other than the turquoise one and the two identical to mine;)

Update: the seller is nice, refunded me the amount I asked so the actual price is very close to the Bonhams piece, though I've not fully convinced by his story of buying it from an expert yet none of them questioned it. And I've confirm the stones are not paste in a brutal way, though no damage eventually :joyful:

Glad you were able to get a refund you were happy with. How did you test the stones? I worry when I hear "brutal way". Hope they are all okay! I do like this little brooch. It's very nicely done.

I scratched it with broken glass:hungover: and no damage (I aslo scratched a known paste for comparison), thus all good!

Haha, I do this because I'm 99% confident with it, just need one final strike to be 100% sure
