Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Thanks, Greg! That makes sense to me. So it might vary by what it is? I know "vintage" is commonly used for wine.

I use vintage a lot when I am pricing items for a sale, I always add a date, like "vintage 1960s". I personally am vintage 1956 ;)

sure most times 'vintage' is improperly used....but it is used so often by so many folks ...that it's taken on a new meaning all it's own.
Yes it's for wine.....and even then requires a date ..... vintage wine says nothing.
So...when you see it used...and you will.....it seems to imply that the item was not recently made.....but also not quite an antique !

Are we going to get folks to stop using the word Vintage while describing or looking to sell their items..........NO !
Can we get them to replace the term with Circa....as in Circa 1999.....well yes...but only on a one by one basis ...here...if we jam it up their nose with a hose !!!
    Otherwise....... # now means Hashtag.....& dat's da !!!

    IMO....FWIW !!

    Hi,
It is too often the downfall to sink to the lowest level. I always thought it was to uphold the best answer. Well Komokwa it is your or the newest level that people are sinking to.:rolleyes::rolleyes: I am sick to think it would be alright to call any plastic shade a 'tiffany" shade. I guess I will crawl back into my cave.:oops::oops:

See....that's even another implied meaning given to a term none of us like to use.
Used could be the chair I'm sitting on or my 19th century church bench....right !

No , Gregsie.....do not slink back into your man cave....come out and play !!
This thread has already left the tracks.......so let's shoot the moon !!

I'm not certain that the lowest level is always aimed for......so much as it can be the easiest or most expedient to find oneself at.
The 1st goose in a wing has the hardest flight , disrupting the air for the followers, but he gets switched out by a goose behind him.....thus every bird shoulders some of the lead.

Hummm.....it's not the best analogy.....but

I'm with you Greg, that is why I challenge things that I consider incorrect.

    @Figtree3
Vintage is a term used to denote the year wine was crushed.
    vin·tage
    /ˈvin(t)ij/
    noun
    noun: vintage; plural noun: vintages
    1.
the year or place in which wine, especially wine of high quality, was produced.
    synonyms: year
"1986 was a classic vintage for the Cabernet Sauvignon grape"

People using it to describe furniture or glass, etc are using the word incorrectly.
However in today's world anything that shows up on the internet, be it correct or not, is how things are interpreted.

Our whole education system will soon be controlled by the internet. We are the last of the individual thinkers.
People will eventually not be able to think or reason for themselves. Thank God I grew up when I did.

Already no one seems to know the difference between possessive and plural, inch marks and quote marks, hyphens and dashes...I could go on and on :wideyed:

    Yep

"Hmmmm, well to me, Vintage in the furniture world is a nice way of saying "used furniture"

    Yep

How odd that, despite the (historically) incorrect use of such a word, several respected posters were able to extrapolate a useful meaning from the word and move on. The usage, however historically incorrect it may be, is now easily understood by most most. That's how living languages operate.

Decrying the decline of things to the lowest level from the use of a single word or insisting on correcting other people's grammar is needlessly po-faced and pedantic. Relax, nobody's calling a plastic shade a real tiffany (and shouldn't Tiffany be capitalized?) That's a joke, btw.;)

    Hi,
Sinking down to the lowest level is NOT to be the normal. Hell they do not even have writing classes anymore. My three nephews can not write a note. They know how to text. I do not have even a phone anymore except what is wired into the house. I guess I need to crawl into the cave and die.:oops::oops:

    And therein lies the problem.
The lack of caring about what should be considered right and wrong.

I choose to care and will continue to speak out.
