I think it was lapis lazuli. Although can't remember for certain. It was in something I read while taking a class on Renaissance art. That was a long time ago.

I just found this review or commentary of a more recent book via a blog. So that must be it!

That wasn't the name I was trying to remember. But perhaps the same shade?

 

Apparently, the blue of Mary's robes was taken from the blue used to identify Byzantine royalty. That's all I got.

Lapis would make sense; it's what the Egyptians used and no use reinventing any wheels you don't need to.

Thanks! I think it was the lapis lazuli/ultramarine. Although unless my memory comes back strongly, I'll never know for sure!
