    My mother collected tiles, that certainly helped in knowing what to look for. When she passed away, we had to sort out all her collections, just about as many as mine, so.....;)

    They are beautiful Paul. They remind me of Portuguese tiles, called 'azulejos', fro azul, blue. some of them have that yellow too.

    What I'm noticing is that the squares are not marked with numbers or letters I recognize, almost more like zodiac symbols.

    Spot on, put there by someone just as unfamiliar with them as I would be with Chinese numbers.

    I think it was reversed on purpose because children sometimes do that. A special touch, maybe the painter was thinking of his/her own children.
