Morning! It's on TLC for me. I have it on auto-tape. I like that show!

I found out about some family history myself, recently. My paternal grandfather was adopted so my maiden name is not my history. Family lore has always said the original name was Levi. Well, it's actually "THE" Levi, as in the Levi Strauss family!

It says here he never married.....one of his nieces?

Yes, TLC. Tonight at 9 (at least it's at 9 here on the west coast, check your listings) they air the final episode of the current season. They've been repeating episodes from previous seasons during the hour before the new one - which is no doubt how Shiloh saw the Reba McEntire one last week which I think was from season 2. I got hooked right from the get go. :shame:

    Shiloh, sorry for the hijack!

It also says in his bio that he left money to two orphanages. I was told, recently, that my grandfather was left on the steps of an orphanage with a letter pinned to his clothing. I was also told that the orphanage burned down.

    Perhaps this one?

I also see that Levi Strauss is buried in Colma. So is my Grandmother and other family members.

Hey Sue! How awesome to even be "a little" related to a famous name!

Did you see Kelsey Grammar last week? How amazing was that?!

No, not yet. It's auto-taped and I don't watch much TV. Don't spill the beans! hahahaha. I'll watch it soon.

    More musing...

I was told long ago that my Grandfather was the product of a Jewish/Catholic liaison. How strange that Strauss left money to both The Pacific Hebrew Orphan Asylum and the Roman Catholic Orphan Asylum.

I don't believe in hijacking threads, I love how conversations and ideas grow from original OP's. :D

My Mom's Dad who is a Duggan is really a Pease. My Granddad was adopted by Pease. My Mom's one older brother wanted to find his paternal Granddad so when he joined the army he used the last name Pease but was never contacted :(

It is rumored that Duggan owned hotels but thats all the info. the family knows?

Then on my Dad's side it is rumored that Girard,my maiden name is a trade? Supposedly back in Canada there was some war going on so the Girard guy and another,{name unknown}?,traded names with my GGGD in order to dodge the service? This is why its so difficult to do my family tree. :arghh:

Oh, good! I learn this news from a cousin at a bridal shower. Not exactly the best place to get into more details. Today was the first time I even bothered to google Levi Strauss. Wouldn't it be something if he was actually my great grandfather! hahaha. Supposedly the Mother got pregnant on a boat coming over here. Couldn't take a baby back with her so gave it up for adoption.

My cousin was passing second hand info from my Dad's youngest half sister, who is actually younger than me. She evidently did extensive research, and is the person with the answers - I haven't seen her in many years, but my cousin talks to her. We are supposed to get together for lunch some day with aunt, so I can find out more.

My mother's aunt did genealogical research on her ancestors and told my mother she traced that line back to Oliver Cromwell.

I don't know if that's bad or good!

I go back to the Mayflower, and could, if I wanted to, join the DAR, but it matters not what the old dead ones did.
    We are what we are.
Oddly enough, the DAR connection is from my maternal G'mother's side.
On my Father's side I have relatives in Canada, where they went after supporting the King during the Revolution. heehee

I can trace my paternal great grand mother to Denmark since she lived and died there. I was a child when I would chat with her over the phone on holidays. My paternal grandma arrived at Ellis Island from Denmark.

On my Mom's side I would have to go to Ireland.

    This is so interesting :)

A complete listing of all "First Arrivals" of the Plymouth Plantation including
Passengers who arrived on the Mayflower in 1620,
the Fortune in 1621, and the Ann and Little James in 1623.

The Leiden Separatists, (Saints) and London Investors, (Strangers)

My mother's father came over from Denmark as a two year old. One of my cousins went over and took photos of the town and the church he was baptized in.

erna.jpeg WOW, for the heck of it I Googled the passenger list for Ellis Island and found my paternal grandmother. Now I have something to do some geneology on her side.:) of course I have to pay 29.95 to get the detaails.

How cool! I didn't realize they were doing this. I've had very few people to search for during the period that Ellis Island was operating, so I've been making do with the Passenger Lists from the broader timeframe (and from many other ports) that can be searched on Ancestry.

Sounds like you should qualify for the Descendants of Loyalists and Patriots of the American Revolution - you have to have someone on each side.

We qualify for a bunch of the hereditary societies & I've never felt an urge to join any but one -- I may get around to it someday just because of the name. It's a society for descendents of colonial tavern keepers, the requirement to join is to prove direct descent from a person conducting a tavern, inn, ordinary, or other type of hostelry prior to 4 July 1776 (within the area which became the first 13 states), and the name they go by is the Flagon and Trencher Society. They meet once a year for lunch in a colonial tavern. My kinda group:happy:.

Then there's always the Descendants of the Illegitimate Sons and Daughters of the Kings of Britain, known to many as the "Royal Bastards.”:wideyed:
