Gentleman came in because he’d dropped the nib section of his Montblanc fountain pen down the drain of his hotel room, and was hoping to buy a replacement. Unfortunately we didn’t have a service license, so I couldn’t help him with that. Disappointed, he was standing in front of the Montblanc cabinets, grumbling about needing a pen but not wanting to buy something he already had multiples of.

I asked him if he travelled a lot, and he rolled his eyes and said he definitely did. So I showed him the Pilot Vanishing Point, and he about lost his mind (for non-pen freaks, imagine seeing a mechanic or carpenter use a ratcheting screwdriver for the first time). I also showed him some exceptional Pelican school pens, and a bunch of other fun stuff. We had a ball. By the time he got to the register, he had quite the pile, but his total was less than a mid-range Montblanc fountain pen and he was positively cackling with glee.

I’d put his poor decapitated pen in a box for safe keeping, along with the information he needed to order a replacement.
