    There are ways to clean this without affecting the paint. Collectors of beer cans and tin litho toys have methods they use. A quick search brings up various products and methods. Most work on removing and minimizing rust. You might want to research this a bit before doing anything. Agree that a paste wax is the method to use for protection once it is clean.
