Sterling silver plate.

Since your bowl is not shown it's hard to say much about it. If the only mark you mention is the the sphinx and no mention of the word sterling or British marks for sterling, I have to ask what causes you to say that is IS sterling?

 

I found some info on the Sphinx backstamp sterling mark. Not much is known except it is credited to the Canadian Silver Co. That operated in Ontario in the mid 20th Century.

 

But the Canadian maker used an actual Sterling stamp and your item apparently does not.

 

I included a picture. The word "sterling" is stamped underneath the sphinx. The bowl is non-magnetic and tarnished. It weighs 98 grams. If it were silver-plated, no way it would weigh a mere 98 grams at 2.5" tall and 4.5" diameter in a Revere style bowl. It does not take much more than that for me to know it is sterling 925. If I put the bowl in your hands and you took a look at it, I am confident you have the knowledge and experience to know if a piece is plated or not. My focus has been on the sphinx. If you look it up via Canadian Silver Co., it will list it under silver companies not silver-plate and sterling is stamped below it.

 

Not sure what you mean by did not use an actual sterling stamp. The word sterling is stamped in the silver. Help me on this.

I am not sure why the sterling stamp is above the sphinx in the picture in your post. The picture I took has it below the sphinx as does my bowl. The stamp on my bowl is from the same stamp that hit the bowl on page 1 from louri. Look closely. The top part of the S is faint. The E looks like an F. The L and I look like a U and the top half of the G is not there. My conclusion is the se stamp that hit louri's bowl marked mine.

 

Picture of my Revere style bowl which appears to have been made by the Canadia Silver Co. in Ontario in the mid 20th century. That is my best info at this time.
