We'll have to be patient, it can take up to two weeks. All those Jacobite pendants on offer.....;)

I am seeing 1980 there. The bar on the f goes right through the centre. For 1735 the bar is just on the right hand side.

Bradbury's has the bar going completely through the centre for 1735. The 1980 mark also doesn't have the elaborate curlicue on the top bar.

My Bannister and Jacksons show something different. They must be out of date. (1970) I do not use the internet for British hallmarks, just Jacksons and Bannisters book. I find it easier to flick through a book.

    Me too!

I checked Bradbury's pocket and have just cross checked in my big Jackson's Bible. Both show that F as 1735.

Gotta say, I'm with Popsycat here - looks like 1980 to me too, from what can be seen, the standard mark appears to be the modern lion rather than the 1735 Archibald Ure assayer initials, and your marks also show the typical order and cartouches for that dating rather than from 1735. The piece itself looks recent to me too, perhaps made by Shetland Silvercraft?

I can't make the standard mark out at all - you're thinking lion rampant? That mark looks awfully rubbed for 1980 and the maker's mark isn't a modern font.

Eh, maker's mark looks like a sans-serif 'SS' in a clipped-corner rectangle to me, but I'm half-blind anymore and on a cell phone too...

I made a typo. My book is 1990. It would be impossible to find an 1980 hallmark in an 1970 book.

    Cheryl, you nailed it!
I must say, I am relieved. The excitement of having a real Jacobite piece in the house would have been a bit too much.
When my mother said she bought it in the 70s, she must have missed that one vital year, 1980. She gave it to me in the 90s to sell, I put it in a box, and forgot about it until I opened the box a while ago. I googled Highland targe pendant, Scottish sterling shield, etc. in several configurations, nothing came up. There was just that unbelievable, worn, date letter, so I posted it here.
It is funny, I own several Shetland Silver items, the three Nornes brooch, Sleipnir earrings, etc., I never thought this could be Shetland. I can't find the targe in their present collection either, the jewellery I mentioned is still there.
I will mail the lovely Anita and team that they won't have to bother. Chances are, they will anyway, because they never gave me a reference number and there is some time between my messages.

Thanks Cheryl, and all of you, for spending so much time on my wee targe, and your combined effort to help, I really appreciate it.

I like Sheila Fleet's jewellery better - the enamel work is fabulous. She's about the only modern maker I'd buy, although Ola Gorie does some nice bits.

My Shetland jewellery was given to me by my brother. I also have some Ola Gorie jewellery, and vintage and antique jewellery, like a pebble and cairngorm set.
