    Psychopsis

Perhaps related in some hierarchal way but completely different looking orchids.

    my goodness...

The pattern line was commissioned by a cymbidian orchid breeder who became one of the largest orchid growers etc etc.

No doubt he had knowledge and affection for more than cymbidians, which Copeland spode designed for him, apparently.

To clarify, seller never says any of the four different types of orchids on the plates are cymbidium, only that grandfather grew them & ordered the set, as did some other orchid growers. But my orchid education has certainly been advanced & my eye delighted.

Here is an orchid for you. Its flower morphed into this in order to attract a male wasp to carry it off thinking it is a flightless female. It smells and looks like the female.

Only 624 sets were ordered, the first, being my Grandmother's, which is available to you in this Auction. The rest of the Sets were for gifts for the Santa Barbara Cymbidium Orchid Society in Santa Barbara CA, as well as for other growers, purveyors and collectors of Cymbidium Orchids across the United States. Canada and Great Britain.

I don't know if any other sets in Robin's egg blue were made. I do know they can be found in navy and green.

These are a different British botanical set, I just haven't found "Fernleigh" on solid Robin's egg blue, just on white textured plates I'll look up to be more precise.

No doubt about it, sex sells. But then, they are called orchids.

In the set with the birds, some of the pieces are pale blue, but others are more green. Your plate looks like this aqua color to me.

My favourite orchids are our tiny wild ones. Invisible, almost, until you spot them in a meadow.

    F for February
    M for March
    A for April
    Y for May
    U for June

I find it interesting they always painted edible flowers and fruits on plates.
