    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

Ah, thanks, Brad... if the purpose is to get approval from somebody, that would be worth keeping *IF* no changes were deemed necessary.

Yes, the artist usually retains them and does with them as they wish. They are not usually sub-standard. Any that are not perfect are generally destroyed.

    Makes sense, Brad...
ALL of my "artist proofs" were substandard. Once I got a good one, I stopped and turned it in. :hilarious:

Wet stone lithographs are prints taken off the surface of the stone, so no plate impression. A drawing is made on polished, fine-grain limestone with a grease crayon. The stone is then wet down. When inks are applied, they stick to the grease crayon but not to the wet stone surface

As stated: an artist proof is a print pulled for the artist to inspect and annotate as desired, a print for the artist's approval. Once any changes have been made and approved, the numbered edition can be pulled.

Nowadays, "artist proof" is frequently a marketing ploy to add value by adding "exclusivity".

It ought to be the artist who determines the appearance of their print. I've heard of printer's proofs involving text and/or photo reproductions, but that's a different context than art prints.

Just a bit off-topic, I did have this etching signed J Haller, but the initials etched in the plate are ELF for Edward Lloyd Field. The plate was etched by Field, but the prints were pulled by Haller. It's like the publisher taking credit for the art. Seems a strange arrangement to me.

Have seen this on field prints in particular. but have also seen prints signed by Field. I wonder if the ones signed by Haller were produced after Field's death.

Here's one for the ages... Edward Lear contributed 10 toucans for Gould's Monograph of the Ramphastidae for the first edition 1833-35, and he was rightly credited with them. By the second edition (1858, I believe) his signature had disappeared and his name was not mentioned. The things people used to get away with, still do, I suppose.
