Oh, maybe I’ll try to condition it and if it fails I’ll wrap the wood in Black Velvet?

Looks like a cigarette box (size?), so it's likely mahogany, and the interior wouldn't have been finished, no doubt the reason the previous sloppy polishing left all that residue. Whether you want to leave it unfinished is up to you, but once cleaned, wooden bits on silver are typically given a couple of coats of a good clear wax (there's satisfaction for me in buffing the wax to a soft glow). I like Danish oil on furniture, and am a fan of Gorilla products, but feel that they're really not quite right for this little box (and I'd stay away from lemon stuff)...

Yes it’s cigarette size. @DragonflyWink here’s the original thread. Any way you know for dating? Thank you for the recommendations.

I'm sure you won't have to cover the wood up:)
the top wood piece that has to be re-glued back in place - is there a spot on it that you can try whatever product you decide to use? might give you an idea if you like what it does or not:)

Not really many test spots, but I feel less worried about it with all the recommendations everyone has given. Thank you, All! :)

I use Howard feed n wax on everything, love it!
Gorilla glue is good for some stuff but it expands so not so good for everything.

If I recall correctly, the German .835 fineness was most commonly found post WWI and into the mid 20th century - pretty simple design, don't think I'd want to guess much beyond that...

I use the original Gorilla glue for repairing big broken clay pots, they've held up for years, that expansion really grabs hold and I leave the foamy stuff to harden inside the pot - but they make a lot of different glues now, like the super-glue Rayo suggested, and I like their Clear glue, which I'm sure isn't as strong as the original, but it is good stuff and so much easier (don't believe you really need a particularly strong glue for this)...
