I got this sterling silver plaque when purchasing a large amount of WWI medals on Saturday. It has been prised off a military sports trophy sometime in the last 120 years. It weighs 90 grams or 3.2 oz The Queen Victoria's Cup (abroad) 1904 The winners were the 2nd Battalion The Welch Regiment. (It is now spelt Welsh). This regiment had been fighting in the Boer War 1899 -1902 and in 1904 were still stationed overseas. Victoria died in 1901 but the trophy was still named after her. My mystery is the hallmark is dated 1906, Birmingham by E&Co first registered 1906. I've seen items before with an older hallmark and newer date, but not something dated in the future. I wonder if it is a replica plaque made in 1906 due to an error on the original or maybe it was never used at all. Although I can find reference to the first 3 named winners in the team I can't find anything about the trophy, or the event.
