Rhino (800x495).jpg I haven't posted in awhile and I don't remember if I posted this one. This is a rhino that lived in the Wild Animal Park in San Diego. He just passed away last year at a very old age. This is colored pencil.

One of my favorites - I probably won't sell it. The Old Mill on Nantucket

    Hi Bev,
Really great work. The rhino looks like a photograph. The mill is breath taking. Thank you for bringing me a reason to stay up this morning.

Bev... Would your work be 'photo realism'?
I'm not sure that's quite the right term. Is it?

I would call Bev's beautiful work - "realism" because it has "painterly" qualities (or "sketcherly" qualities), whereas "photorealism" is a painting that actually appears to be a photograph.

I spent a summer on Nantucket in the 1970s and I remember that windmill! Your renderings are better than photographs, thanks for showing me, Bev.

I know of Richard Estes, who is truly amazing especially with city scenes, and I would have had no clue her's weren't photos if she had not told me it was her pencil work.

The great thing about being an artist rather than a photographer is the ability to leave out things you don't want - ugly power lines, etc.

Here's an image of fishing boats in the harbor on Crete. There were oil tankers and rigs in the background that I left out. Sorry it's a blurry photo.

No chance. I don't do large paintings.

Colored pencil is a solitary, Loooong process. I find it extremely therapeutic. Very Zen.

Good point about the ability to "leave out things" and much of your work is darned near "photorealism" Bev. Very soothing to look at too!

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

This was a commissioned painting. Not my usual Mexican romp. The lady wanted a fantasy piece, something for her new lakeside house. She specifically wanted "mallards, fish, and dreamy scenery, with deep blues". Here's what she got, and she was pleased. It will be the center piece for a big livingroom... there's a big window-wall that looks out on the lake. Paid and gave me a big tip, plus an invitation to her housewarming party (I'll have business cards handy, Komo!). It's biggish... 5 x 6 or so. Acrylics and spray paint. My idea was that you don't really know what's underwater or above, and I blended reality with fantasy. It has absolutely NO Mexicans, parrots, tequila, portraits of El Chapo, or restaurant scenes in it! Sometimes I try to stretch. Thanks for looking, y'all!
