Featured Scotland by the Sea Painting...help with artist name

I was never 100% convinced that the German W Kohl mentioned was a match, but when someone said they had a print that matched, I didn't think about it again. Until it got bumped.

So. First I found this painting by an "unknown" W Kohl

Now, the signature is not an obvious match, but if you dink around with the image and look at the strokes of the "w" and compare it to the strokes of your "w"... well, there's a significant similarity and it's not the standard way to stroke a "w".

(edit SIDEBAR: I'm not convinced that the above painting is by the same artist as yours... its existence is what sent me down the research road. )

So, then I started doing some research and found William Richard Kohl (who sometimes went by Richard William). William was born Jan 1901 in Maryland. William died in 1980 in Maryland.

William worked all his life (or at least as far as I can track him) as an artist. He traveled to England in 1928. To France in 1932. He served in the Army from 1942-1945. I have not yet found his military records, so I'm not sure where he was stationed.

When he wasn't traveling or in the service, he was in Maryland.

William never married, never had children. No direct heirs. He did have two brothers and a foster sister. His foster sister had no children. One of his brothers had no children.

That leaves the one remaining brother, Philip Gilbert Kohl (named after his father). PG had one son, also Philip Gilbert, and one daughter, Jane Kohl.

I'm not sure what happened to Jane, but the youngest Philip Gilbert died in 2004. In Tucson, Arizona.

So. I think this "W. Kohl" from Maryland, is your W. Kohl. I have no other art to look at, no other proof.

So I have some new information on the painting. It appears to be someone's copy of an original by the English painter Daniel Sherrin (1868-1940). I have found a few prints of the D. Sherrin painting "Scotland by the Sea" online, but I still do not know where the original is located. On the print it states the following: 1824 Scotland by the Sea copyright 1913 by D. Sherrin. So I guess my painting is a duplicate of the Sherrin. Not sure why it is "1824" and he was born in 1868. I thought I would share...just in case anyone was interested. Thanks!
