Picked this up a few years ago, just found it in a box. Lol. Apprx 1.75" x 4.25". I am assuming it is a Satsuma blank painted by a home crafter? Any thoughts?

    Thanks Steve PXL_20240430_161105744~2_copy_1355x1053.jpg PXL_20240430_161113814~2_copy_1333x1134.jpg PXL_20240430_161122492~2_copy_1352x1134.jpg PXL_20240430_161133619.MP~2_copy_1437x819.jpg PXL_20240430_161149812~2_copy_1448x1134.jpg PXL_20240430_161230997~2_copy_1521x968.jpg

I wonder if FWG only added the gold parts. The (lines of the) flowers look much neater.

At least the gold is hobbyist, but why do you think the rest is Satsuma?

The shape, foot and crackle glaze do seem rather like satsuma. Not saying it is though. However, it's all hobbyist painted and perhaps a pattern was used. Patterns appeared in magazines, etc. for the hobbyist painter. I think this is from the "golden age" of hobbyist painting -- early 20th c. The black outline around the gold lines is not easy to do even if you have a steady hand.

It does look satsuma like. Here’s a little satsuma dresser box for comparison. Albeit a later one.

Edit: to clarify I mean the box looks satsuma like, not the decoration. Although the Japanese did do a lot of Art Deco style, not very traditional Japanesey decoration, particularly on the Nippon/Noritake stuff. Hobbyist painted makes sense though.

I agree that it was painted by an amateur enthusiast. The decor is very attractive but it doesn't seem like an authentic satsuma design to me.
