The worst thing that happened to the Antique and Collectable market was EBAY. There are certain Markets that have improved. Very good Carnival Glass for instance is one.

Haven't seen this in a while, probably just that people are being less confessional in their eBay listings, but have many times seen a seller explain that they are selling collection to meet medical bills, college tuition for kids, student loans of their own. It doesn't take a recession in the US.

I always wonder whether postal & customs workers roll their eyes & say to co-worker: Another little one that's probably jewellery, valued at $10.

Best thing for the collector who collects something not likely to be found at local thrifts, yard, boot sales.

Higher end products, including antiques, are relatively recession-proof. Lower end goods also hold well so I could see cheap recycled goods sold in many antique shops that are not necessarily antique continuing to do well. Could see a resurgence in brown furniture since it is cheaper than new. The middle segment is potentially where we may see a drop off.

When the stock market drops......fine art takes a hit.
Of the few auction houses on my mailing list.....or me on theirs ...this year has been wildly successful ......we'll see what shakes loose in the coming months...

There was an article in today's paper about brown wood making a comeback, so you never know. People are getting away from that "blow it open" remodeling style, with the big furniture. I don't know if antique pieces will benefit but it can't hurt!

I'd rather not see another recession hit so soon after the "great recession of 2008" but there are many negative economic indicators out there like the transports index which have been correct more often than not in the past. In order to weather any upcoming turbulence, it is important to be prepared and have contingencies in place like an emergency fund. A recession is not a time to be spending recklessly and thus living paycheck to paycheck like many Americans are doing.

It seems everything I try to sell on eBay gets no bids, nor even watchers, even though I keep lowering the price until it doesn't become worth my time to list it. BUT...everything I want to BUY goes for ridiculously high prices. Eg: antique and barely vintage blown glass Christmas and Halloween ornaments. You would think they were priceless Steuben or something. Even the cotton batting and Dresdens are fetching insane prices. Check this out! https://www.ebay.com/itm/202545481487?ul_noapp=true

I just read an article from an auction house owner in Zurich. short and sweet - art and collectables to save your fortune is nil and void: except of course high-priced stuff nobody can afford.

a couple of things re ebay imho
I started buying in 2000 it was the only place I could find certain items I was hunting for.
I still buy in a weak moment.
    i) things that were once very difficult to find are now overwhelmingly available and in turn devalued
ii) greedy vendors and outrageous Global shipping: an item sells for 210, vendor throws on 25 for shipping and handling, Global shipping throws on 45, depending where you are add 0-30% for exchange. Voila "ridiculously overpriced" at as much as three times the cost of the item, not very attractive or sensible way to shop

as for Antiques still being desired, I always say they can only age further sitting around and there will always be someone with the good sense to appreciate these fine things
