    Hi MOS,
I can't find a reference to Blue Poles at the Sydney Opera House, but I think it was always on display at the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra (our national capital like Washington DC).
It was bought in 1973 and the purchase was personally signed off by the Prime Minister of the time Gough Whitlam. At $1.3million, it was the most ever paid worldwide for an American painting. Its current value is now $350 million. (Be inspired all you thrift store/yard sale pickers! ;))
It has recently been returned to NGA Canberra after it was on loan to The Royal Academy in London in 2016 and it has only ever left Australia once before on loan in 1998 to the MoMArt in NY for a Pollock retrospective.
Also, I have wonderful memories of visiting the Knox Albright when I stayed in Buffalo, and of ice skating on an outdoor pond in the middle of winter.
    Thanks or the reminder. :)

Looking it up, I see that the Opera House opened the same year the painting was acquired. I guess the stories merged in my mind.
