Try to drill a 'hidden' exploratory hole in the base of the nose cone.
Same in the body and see what happens.

Measure across opposite fins, will be either 60mm or 81mm because the less shiny part is a set of mortar shell tail fins. Little tabs help hold the increment charges. Mortar shells come with little bags of propellant held on by the tabs, between the fins for the maximum range of the mortar but the gunner removes and discards all not needed to reach his target. The shiny nose was made up by someone to make the fantasy item or trench art. The original fin assembly is certainly aluminum.

Ok nice! I did an image search and found this photo and it’s definitely the same tail section aside from the holes. It’s described as WW2 mortar. Thanks everybody! 8E8503B6-B422-425E-8732-42C4D17709F3.jpeg

It wouldn't hurt it a bit to drill a small hole in the base of the nose 90* near the threads. You'll know immediately what metal it is.

Likely the person who fantasized it plugged the holes with body putty, a common “restoration” method. Ms. Spring’s biz sells a lot of restored 60mm WP mortar shells, that once had a “demil” hole in the side. A worker plugs the hole with body putty, repaints it, adds original fins and screws a repro aluminum fuze on the nose. She had a local machinist make solid aluminum fuzes by copying an original, working example she loaned him. I don’t see how she sells it so cheap, I think it should go for at least $100.

What could the threads on the tail be for? Maybe a dummy projectile to screw on the end of a launcher for parades? Kind of like you see in photos from North Korea. Take it to the nearest airport and ask a handy TSA employee... They love questions like that :angelic:

    Hi,
Two weeks after 9-11 I was helping a friend clear out an apartment in Brooklyn. The guy's Mother had past away. he was in from California to settle her debits and clear out her apartment had she lived in for 40 yrs. he was so excited to find a bright blue practice bomb he had bought in the Army Navy store. he planned on bring it back on the plane with him.:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:. When he called the airline and told about his plan they went crazy and nixed his idea. He then thought about taking it to the Post Office and mailing it back to him. They went insane and said NO WAY IN HELL. The bright blue bomb was 4 ft long and weighted about 25 pounds. The guy was determined to ship the bomb back to CA. He ended up packing it up and shipped it with a moving company. It got to CA in three weeks and was delivered by 4 FBI agents.:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:.

I worked around these things and trying to picture this one. Do you know if it had 4 'grids' that came out the back end in place of tail fins?

    Hi King,
I do not remember for sure just that it was metal painted bright blue had a tap on the top that you filled with water for weight and the four fins on the bottom were attached on the cylinder and attached together right near the end edges. I was hoping he would have given up and let me buy it from him.

    Hi Buddy,
All I know is that he was "interviewed" three times by the FBI, CIA and Home Land Security.
