    Maybe.

But a lot of antiques were exported from Europe and in 2000.
In Russia, there were laws that allow to import antiques without duty. And as I know, some European countries also have laws that allow free export of antiques))

    Clearly, thanks.

The picture may well be from these places. Who knows))

How did you write, in a similar style have seen paintings in monasteries? It is possible that the picture was once in a monastery.
Painting is relatively simple, but attractive))

Aquitaine Is What It IS! But NEVER BORED!

Not exactly nails, but two solid upholstery like "tacks" showing along the relining here......

Well, it looks as if the painting was glued to this canvas of the second half of the 19th century, and then nailed to the stretcher.

By the way, someone probably restored the picture. In the places of loss, the canvas was painted over. Later, probably already almost in modern times, someone scratched the picture.

Old paintings sometimes suffer from "cupping" where the old paint cracks and starts to flake off. One of the solutions is to coat the back with various substances that will pull the paint back onto the canvas and then attach it to another canvas to help protect it.

It was obviously a cherished painting for someone to go to all that trouble.

Definitely the Virgin Mary Dolorossa and not a nun. It's pretty much a mirror image copy of this:
