I'm not seeing the textures you'd expect from an original oil especially in the face, doesn't look sharp enough

The Only way your gonna know for sure is to take it out and see where the canvas starts and the paint begins

Still think you did alright for $60 though, the fact that there are others is not a great sign

Frankly, I was thinking giclee print BUT it appears that Grumbacher no longer produces stretched canvas. Perhaps OP could message Grumbacher about the possible age of the canvas itself.

So far, just doing a quick search, the paintings I'm finding on Grumbacher stretched canvas, with similar markings on the stretcher, are claimed as 1940s-70s.

Sounds like a great purchase, congrats Lithographer! :)

So this might be obvious to some, but does the paint going around the corner a bit on the canvas just clinch the deal that this is a real painting? Would a giclee just be cut off cleanly at the edge?

Now that the painting has been removed from the frame, what clues help us know it isn't a giclee?

I think it's a very good indication that's it's a painting Lucille, like you've mentioned a printed image wouldn't have the paint overspill to the sides

The lack of texture could be due to a thinning down of the oils

Also looks to have genuine aging as well

Lithographer also has pictured the back of the painting. That staining is nothing you would expect from a modern printed process. It is also has natural looking age to it.

Yep agreed, but there was a chance that it could have been some kind of vintage print process
At Least taking it out has quashed any suspicions, and the fact that there are others about was suspicious

I saw that staining on the back of the canvas before he took it out of the frame and was also thinking it was a good sign as it seemed to show age.

Not questioning that this is the real deal, I'm just trying to educate myself if there are hints suggesting any painting is or is not a giclee.

It seemed like people here were on the fence until it was taken out of the frame. Was it the way the edges looked that convinced people once it was out of the frame? Looking for tips for myself if I ever run into something in the future in question. Thanks!
