Ornate silverplate hollow cylinder for what?

A mezuzah goes on the door surround of an observant Jewish household with a verse from the Torah in it. Don't ask me which, I was raised RC.

There's still many houses locally which have them. One of my Muslim neighbours had seen the one on the door of the house she bought, and wondered what it was for years. She was utterly fascinated when I explained what it was, and rather valued it more, after. (Islam also has a tradition of sacred verses as you enter a home.)

Thank you. I have never seen one [CofE]. Sort of like a Jewish feng shui. You would certainly respect it. There was a recent documentary made in Melbourne about a year in the life of a hardline Jewish community but I don't remember seeing any of these in that either. In Sydney it would probably be nicked. Must explore further.
