I have nothing to base my Aussie opal theory on other than it looks quite modern compared to Gran's other jewellery and possibly a gift Dad may have given Gran when he visited the UK from Aus. Possibly also Brazilian as they lived in South America for many years

You don't really want me to believe it is Brazilian with that dark colour opal in that brooch with that mark do you?;)
But OK, I'll play along, for Tracey's sake.:D

    - The usual gold fineness in Brazil is .770, .375 gold fineness would be considered too low in Brazil.
    - The brooch is marked 9ct, the ct mark is used in Australia and New Zealand, not in Brazil.
    - The style of the brooch is not Brazilian, but was seen a lot in Australia when I lived there.
    - The opal doesn't have the classic Brazilian opal colours, which are much more in the soft, pastel range. The strong colours of this opal are seen a lot in Australia.
    - Tracey lives in Australia, as did her father.

So not just a single factor, but the combination of all of these factors says enough to me. Australia.

Sure the setting is probably Australian, but can you really identify an opal original location by looking at it? Want to guess where this opal was mined?

You like to set challenges, so here is one for you:

You tell me where I have ever said that I could identify an opal original location by looking at it.

Yes, you are allowed to search the entire forum. And when you have found it, you are allowed to set me one single challenge, and I will go for it. Promise.
While you are searching, you will come across several threads where I said loud and clear that I don't like guessing games and certainly not games playing. You may want to remember that.

It's not a game,I did say the OP's opal looked like a triplet in a post above. You can use a gem tester on a triplet and it will read glass, quartz or sapphire. Using lamp black or black onyx on a thin slice opal changes it's appearance. Your knowledge is different than mine and many other members of the forum. The photo above looks like many from Australia but it's not.
