    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

    Apprendo mas cada dia.

OG, you'll be happy to know that yet another white male has joined the board WHO HAS THE ABILITY TO SPEAK MORE PROPER SPANISH THAN I. His name is Tom East. Now you and he and Brad can catch me in mistakes and conjugate obscure verbs together. :p:p:p

So you think we now have you covered coming, going and standing still. :arghh: :angelic: :meh: :oldman:
Y nos vamos todos aprendiendo más cada día

Gila, something else I shall tell you. I do not care for Mexico. Have not had happy times there. Basically found too much corruption, especially with the police who make up claims that you just broke a law. The only way out is to ask, "How much?" And pay it. It is not a good feeling to accept that as prevalent, up, down and sideways. I feel sorry for many to whom it is a necessity. Very much dislike those who do it out of greed and habit.

But overall this is because you have made that comment before.........
"another white male." That makes me stop short.
Gila, I do not think of Mexicans as another race. Yes, some mixed Mayan descendants are sometimes recognizable. But I consider Mexicans to be Spanish speakers. That's all.

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

You're right about Mexico, amigo. And if there's a solution, I don't know it and I don't know anybody who does. My Tio Tony loved (as he pronounced it ) "Amayyreecahh" for good reasons.

I'll have to think about that, OG... I never heard anybody consider Mexicans and Caucasians as the same race, not even the governments of either country. That said, you're absolutely right that there are Mexicans of every race, united by language.

I tend to get comfortable and careless and throw potentially offensive terms around sometimes. Some of my best friends are white males (said in humor and affection and playfulness).

    I apologize, Uncle OG!

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

    So...... OG.
I read up on the question and it turns out there is complication and controversy about Mexicans' "race". We just call ourselves "La Raza", of course, but it's as complicated as "What race are Americans" if you really throw it wide open. When we say we are La Raza, we are (perhaps clumsily) referring to those of us Mexicans who fit the stereotypical brown-skinned, Mexico-acculturated Spanish-speakers, yes. I enjoy calling myself Mexican, and having some fun with the stereotype. If I get out of hand I'll go to my room. :)

Hey, I'm the kind that comes from northern Europe. You know, where the sun shines rarely. Therefore my ancestors didn't get tanned often. In fact they usually got burned. So I do envy such as Mexicans who live in a warmer and sunnier climate. They develop and pass that gene down for hundreds of generations.

One reason "white guy" stings. :inpain: I envy you!

"I tend to get comfortable and careless and throw potentially offensive terms around sometimes."

Absolutely no offense, Gila. No apologies accepted because they're not needed. And I hope I didn't in any way offend you. I admire the talents you have and feel fortunate to know you among all the others on this site.

Tio?(LOL) I'm another of the contingent who should never even bother trying to get a tan. I always envied people who could get in front of a camera and have a flash go off and still look good. All you see of me is glasses and glare.

OK, I'll be truthful. When I said "In my house Go to your room" means WIFI is automatically shut down." I was not accurate.
My grand and great grand children are not under my control, and last time I did oversee the behavior of teenagers Al Gore had not yet invented the internet.

And,evelyb, the last time I had what could pass as "tanned" my dermatologist put me through a 60 day "face peel" to get rid of it. :sour:

    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

I was born with a tan, no tan-lines. Always wanted to be pale and rosy, with freckles. But at least brown girls usually have good hair. Although it comes with a nice black mustache after a certain age!

...Once when I was sick, I remember my father muttering, "Poor thing; she looks like the underside of a fish."

And sun is not much of a remedy for me. After an hour or so, I am noticeably greenish.

    It is not becoming.

When I'm in the sun, I start to turn browner by the minute.

I certainly cannot disagree with the first three words, but had to find what might be causing that unusual reaction. Found some probable causes, and also that we do have a not only attractive, but rare lady here. Congrat's.

Silver is beautiful, however pure silver is too soft and can easily scratch and become damaged, so it is alloyed with copper to make Sterling Silver (92.5% silver+7.5% copper). This is how we get the mark 925 for sterling silver. That can cause a chemical reaction that can turn skin a green color.

Don't panic, this "green finger effect" is a reaction especially if you have high body acidity. It happens to only about 2-3% of people but percentage is increasing due to increased percentages of chemicals in our environment and food we eat.

Sometimes these reactions are occasional and happen when someone eats something with high acidity like tomatoes, if someone is taking certain medications, or due to excitement.

And I always thought it was the obvious distinction between real and "fake" sterling. Thanks again, SilverT
