Old brass phone

    You are correct. They did.
    I took my first space in a co-op back in 1980.
    There was a man there buying the old wooden wall phones and rewiring them for use with the current phone lines.

    I was married in '86, and I remember my husband and I going into a new phone store set up to sell phones of all types and designs.

    Some of the reproduction phones were dial, to make them look more authentic.

    I've found that sometimes when one has difficulty finding comparable items, it is because the item is a reproduction, replica, or fantasy item.
    This often happens for example when a person thinks they have a genuine Native American item, and can't find any comparables. It may be that the import stores are full of the same thing, but just haven't advertised their wares online.
    This phone looks like a newer item to me, not necessarily based on any particular original.
    As mentioned, a look at the inner workings would probably be very revealing, as electronics have changed considerably over time.
