I have never heard of these types of beads.

Japanese artistry,sublime-both their more sophisticated pieces and their folk art 'Mingei'. From the smallest to largest design and execution,an extraordinary artistic culture.

Those beads need restringing from the looks of them. I'd volunteer but might have a hard time giving them back!

With Most Humble Sincerity Honored Jewelry Aficionados- I am not a Jewelry Hunter, but I revere Japanese Arts & Crafts ( I even love the Japanese 'Critter Cafes'-Cat,Bird,Monkey Cafes, see YouTube or Dodo Planet). But as with most things Japanese-from gumball prizes to novelty erasers (yes, like you'd use to erase a pencil mark, but not !),I'm not surprised by the otherworldly beauty & craft of their beads.
    PS-Good Read,'The Otori Series'-great,but not a historical chronicle-a novel.

I'm a lover of Ginbari - Japanese enamel, as often as not on jewelry. The mini works of art might make a convert of you. Anything sufficiently goofy comes home with me.

Ojime and Ginbari could definitely make me a jewelry lover, some of those ladies can be Samurai intense re gems.Be nice if I could find a cheap way to dip my toes in and make many rookie mistakes-cheap mistakes good/expensive ones bad.
...therefore I must become an Iron Chef jewelry picker !

Thanks Bronwen-those tiny things are like some object fashioned in myth !
P.S.-My Lady and I both read Margaret Atwood, she is a living prescient treasure-'The Blind Assassin','Oryx & Crake Series' and of course 'The Handmaid...'. Just wished we lived in Canada and could read these 'fantasies' a bit more leisurely.
