I looked at those odd scratchings several times, Johnny...what I see is more like the results of several odd folks' efforts, with tools an' maybe fingernails, to determine what the sealing substance might be...in order to judge what effort may be required to get through it. Obviously those people found that level of labor beyond their willingness to undertake for an uncertain reward.
Now it's Bosko's turn...may he acquit himself admirably!

My initial thoughts are that it contained some kind of food stuff and the seal is to keep out any air and bacteria to stop it from spoiling.

I once bought a little jug from the thrift store.
Upon closer inspection, there was a petrified mouse inside.
    Open it...open it!

Most entertaining thread in a long time. Anyone remember Geraldo Rivera opening Al Capone's vault? More fun closed than open!:hilarious:

A lot of pottery companies made these little mini liqueur/liquor jugs. I had a couple boxes full umpteen years ago and have lots of info stored away on an external hard drive, which I can't access anymore because my computer broke.

I used to know exactly which company made the jugs with the scratched-up, hacked-up with the trimming knife, messy bottoms. I can't make it rattle out of my head right now. If I think of it later I will let you know.

It would have originally had a paper label and State liquor stamps. I've never seen any with such a messy wax job, so I too think it was reused and resealed at a later date.
Very mysterious... What could be in there?
