Not sure this post needs any more comments, but I'd like to add that I read once in a very old volume of periodicals - late 18th or early 19th century - an article on the latest scientific advice on reviving someone apparently drowned. A list of actions to take included putting the person in bed with a naked woman to warm them up - seriously! - and restoring the action of the bowels by using bellows to "blow smoke up the fundament". It was only right at the end of instructions that it was advised to try to get them breathing again. I can't remember which volume this was in, unfortunately, wish I'd made a note!

Is this where the expression "blowing smoke up your a--" came from?
