    I use these --ricer and pestle--when I'm making choke cherry jam, so I can separate the fruit from the stone ...:). Got them at a garage sale and wasn't sure what it was called, only saw the usefulness of it.

    Judy, thought everyone knew about beaten biscuits. Ours weren't as hard as hardtack. We made them about every ten days. Grandma would put the dough on an old stump near the brick kitchen and we (the kids) had to taken turns beating them with an tool that looked just like OPs - but older and well used. We usually had them with thin cut salt cured ham. Yummm when I think about it! Patd

    The only hardtack I'm familiar with and love is.......knäckebröd.

    Such an interesting story about your grandmother's method for beating!! As a kid, I bet you thought it was so much fun.....what a great childhood memory.
