An odd anecdote about signing - I have a nice item by a very well-known First Nations artist. Not signed, but came with correspondence from the artist to the person who had commissioned it; has the original letters about what was requested, and such, and then: "I was so anxious to get it shipped that I forgot to sign it; but I guarantee it is my work." And the letter is signed. But if the letters got separated from the carving, nobody would know who had carved it.

 

Yikes, I'd be tempted to send it back to the artist for a signature, if I received something like that...

I have a mask , that for reasons unknown......save my speculation...., had the signature chipped away on the rear.

but.....
I knew who carved it, by the design and workmanship.....

A still living artist.....I reached out to him and he confirmed it was indeed his....but he carved it so long ago.....he couldn't remember when !!!

 

Makes you wonder why someone chopped his name out of it????? What in the holy hand grenades?
