quote toomanybooks : What, exactly, puzzles you about the fiddle? Is it the position it is held, on the chest rather than under the chin?

He is a fiddler from the Bearn region of France - interestingly, an area near the Pyrenees, like the silver fir trees.unquote

Komo was the one who was puzzled about "that darned fiddle", not 2many.
To help, 2many wondered if he was puzzled about the position it was held in and posted a photo of a folk fiddler.
Yes, the fiddler happened to be from Béarn, which was a coincidence, but she didn't post it to prove that it was only played that way in Béarn. Fact is that many folk fiddlers all over the world (including Europe and the US) hold their fiddle like that. It is one of the traditional ways to play it, and I am sure 2many knows that.
She was clearly only trying to help, not trying to prove a point, so I don't know why you posted that little whistle at the end of your post #61.

I have tried, unsuccessfully, to find something in the subject matter of this painting that is distinctively, and exclusively, American or French. Every feature we have focused on can be found in both regions. That is the frustration.

Thank goodness for google translate. Our doppelgangers (to mix languages).

It all got biased from the beginning, though, by the title "American painting from 1891". Everyone races off in what might be the wrong direction.

I agree. In most cases it is best not to speculate too much and let people start their research from the known facts.
