The very best of all. I can't read this without laughing:

"Right. I had to get up in the morning at ten o'clock at night half an hour before I went to bed, drink a cup of sulphuric acid, work twenty-nine hours a day down mill, and pay mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our Dad and our mother would kill us and dance about on our graves singing Hallelujah"

My kids never want to hear that I grew up in a very rural area with outdoor plumbing (aka outhouse) and no hot running water. Every bit of water had to be heated on a wood stove that my Dad would light up about 5 am to get the frost off the inside of the windows before my Mom and I got up. On the other hand, it was idyllic with fishing in our own stream, jumping out of the hayloft into the haywagon, running around barefoot all summer. Wouldn't trade it for anything.
