    Hi Fid,
    I did not know you were in Alsace. That is were some of my ancestors were from. Perhaps explains my love of this piece. I can not explain my fascination with this piece.

    perhaps a certain resemblance in hairstyle to Harpo or Chico Marx ? they had Alsatian forbears as well...

    bottom of stone. if it was the top of something, I'd expect at least a hole for a metal bar or wooden rod to hold it in position.
