Full daylight and natural light helps too. Another trick is to take a translucent plastic gallon jug (4-liter in other parts of the world) and cut the bottom off. Put the jewelery or other bits under the bottom of the jug and shoot through the neck. It works like a mini light tent. In the US we use milk containers, but I'd imagine water jugs would work about as well.

 

I sometimes use one of those white half sphere Modernist lamp shades, and photograph through the top. I even have a small one. And always daylight, preferably no direct sunlight.
