Ooh, I should have clarified in this post to be really careful with dollar store superglue. I believe it can etch some plastics. I've used it more for metal repairs. Sorry for the faux pas.

Seconded on being careful with that stuff. For breaks in horn bits, I might even try good old KrazyGlue. I use that on my fingernails when they crack, and what works on nails ought to work on horn too. (My nails like to crack/split when it's cold, often at or below the skin line. The glue holds things long enough for them to grow out to where they can be cut.) Not sure I'd use it on an antique piece though.

There are specialized glues for jewelry to use which make no white halo around the glued parts, I put the name of one of them later when I go to my workshop.
For the position of this item, the round part is on the front and your picture it's to the rear, the ladies hold those items very high on their hear to show them to the front.
They are simplest versions you can use on the rear , they are less decorated, made like a horseshoe, best ones in blond horn to simulate tortoiseshell.

really? I'm wearing it in the direction of the curve of the comb , it would sit very uncomfortably flipped the other way!

This is one that was intended to be worn lower, with the prongs behind a chignon just above the neck. The decoration would be near the centre of the back of the head. They wore those horseshoe combs, but also these higher ones.

Here is the higher one Lecollectioneur meant, top right and lower left:

The relief of the decoration would be on the front.

And this lady is wearing the lower one I was talking about, the relief of the decoration would be on the back. The top is just showing above her head:

Ah that makes sense! The relief on mine faces the back when it's placed so that the comb curves against the head and does seem to sit more naturally lower down rather than perched up high! Loved the illustration!

Thanks for the illustrations Any Jewelry, they are more clear than my explanations, another thing if you have the curve in reverse is that it can hurt you if you are in a car for example and you have a shock, when it's the curved part of the teeth on your head is more safe and comfortable.;)
