The cameo itself is a sardonyx, white on dark brown, that has been dyed a bit so that there is a black rim around the brown. The edges & back are probably also black. I don't know exactly how the metal work is on the back, but if you look closely, you can see tiny prongs at intervals all around the edge of the cameo. Not know JAR methods of construction, I do not know how the stones were arrayed that way.

Thanks! I am so 'new' to cameos and shells, never realized they could be en habille'. Thank you so much for bringing a whole new world of cameo information to my attention.

Yes and I wondered if tiny drill holes went through the shell - thought they may. Thanks!

Yes I saw what looked to be tiny 'jump rings' that didn't quite look prongish, but difficult to see. I'm good as long as no holes had to be drilled into the cameo! ;)

    I'm glad to hear it's prongs! ;)

They would never drill through a Pistrucci, even if it is Pistrucci fille.

It is stone, although a casual name for the type of helmet shell that produces a similar dark brown color is sardonyx shell.
