Hello. I'm pondering over whether to purchase this blue and white plate which I believe bears a 4 character Kangxi mark, but is probably late 19th century. However, I've been a bit put off by the evidence of the Chinese export seal, which was used on either very common pieces, modern copies, or other low value items which were deemed to be of no cultural significance to the Chinese authorities. I appreciate that that in earlier years, such as in the 1970's, what may now be considered to be 'more desirable' items were allowed out of the PRC, as they were still relatively common at that time. I also considered the possibility of the plate being Japanese, but bearing a copy Chinese mark. However, there don't seem to be any spur marks on the base, and furthermore, it bears what appears to be a Chinese export seal. Anyway ! I'm a bit perturbed by the border decoration on the piece, which may possibly be transfer printed - looking at the broken lines in the 3 and 4 o'clock area. Okay, it might just be wear and tear, but I'm a bit hesitant. Which is why I'd sincerely appreciate the opinion of the more experienced collectors of Chinese ceramics. Your opinion would be most sincerely appreciated ! Thanks in advance.
