    Hi Milt,
Rust is NOT mold. Rust is an oxide of iron and water. Fresh rust is orangey red color chemically known as Hydrated Ferric Oxide, old rust is blackish brown and known as Ferrous Oxide. Molds/moulds may have rust but rust does not have molds.:muted::muted::muted::muted::muted::muted:

Just to be clear, the book shown doesn't appear to exhibit foxing, but as Fig suggested, does look to have the 'brittle' pages that resulted from the acidic sizing that was often used in the last part of the 19th century and into the first couple of decades of the 20th.

95% or more of the books you will find in average homes aren't worth the scrap value of the weight of paper in them. My brother is a home-based internet book dealer who uses Amazon now, once used E to sell. His favorite source is the periodic library sales in his area of CA. College library sales better yet. Certain categories of books are often valuable, certain categories hardly ever have valuable books. If you want to get into book selling to make money spend some time figuring why books that sold for over $50. Had that value; worrying about lesser values will waste a lot of time. Read ebay booksellers board always and visit other book dealer sites.

Really? I have a set of Zane Grey given to me when I was 8 by an elderly neighbor. When I got divorced, my ex 'stole' it and took it to South Carolina. It took me four years of nagging and threats, but he paid to have it shipped back. Idiot. Anyway, I'm going upstairs to look at the titles. NOT that I'd sell any of them, but it would be good to know.

I sold a 1929 Valentino book a couple months ago for 249.99,about 10 years ago it was selling for 800.00 on Abes. Also a couple of 1937 Lucy Dawson books for 40.00 each,

I have 1800's books worth diddly :( So its not the age but the content sadly.
