Thank you @KikoBlueEyes !! I knew it...I just knew it was that... :D Why have such a deep carve-out for a cigarette that's perfect for a brush, and a deep well for ashes but just right for water? Very lovely. :)

Oh, yes, I agree with you 100%, both the variety and complexity of human creativity (that sets us apart from any other animal and to me is the very reason we are here - to self-express ourselves to the max!) - as well as all that this forum offers its viewers. I continue to be astounded by it all!

And I too have seen extraordinary carved objects especially Asian in a local museum that has a substantial collection. Many items sometimes defy an obvious purpose but the museum always appears to know. It's fair to say, however, the sacredness of Chinese painting, in the past anyway, intentionally included beautiful tools to help create the beautiful artwork, so it made perfect sense to have a brush cleaner that's a delight to view as well as use. That said, Henry Li on youtube uses old saucers and a plastic tub!! :p I've been watching his videos lately, thinking about painting 9 goldfish... Maybe I need an ornate brush cleaner for added inspiration! :D

Ooops I thought I had removed my pretentious statement in time. You are a lot more adventurous than myself in attempting painting 9 fishes. I hope you find exactly the right brush washer for this endeavor.

Hard to say when it was made and how it was made, photos are not clear when enlarged and lighting wrong. The material isn't big, maybe $20 rough price for the bowl and could have been a scrap piece for the tree and would be considered small pieces of jade.

One of the 1st things we learn here..........is not to trust eBay descriptions.....unless you can back up an assertion with some credible evidence.

In my opinion brush washers are not too deep , have mostly rounded edges, with enough room for the brush to be cleansed at an angle ........with no brush...( cigarette ) holders.

Yes, there are always minor exceptions....... & I guess you could always use an ashtray as a brush washer..................
    BUT....
Just cuz a cat had her kittens in an oven...
    Don't make em Biscuits ! :banghead: ;)

it is true that descriptions may be inaccurate and happens very often. however, it could just be a "modern" take on a traditional brush washer and they decided to add the brush rest. generally brush rests are separate or they are hung up so that the ink/water does not drip down the handle, no?
anyway, it is a nice piece and i would use it anyway i want :D

But you can "call" them 'biscuit kitties', if you want to. :playful:
