Is this Givre in the center? TYIA

Evidently the answer is no, no matter how you define givré, unless you would describe the surface of your cabs as frosted, which I'm not seeing in photos.

 

I totally agree with Cheryl - aventurine inclusions, nothing like goldstone. A totally different manufacturing technique.

And in all my years, I have never ever hear anyone conflate givre with goldstone. It's nonsense.

Givre means frosted as an adjective in French, or hoarfrost as a noun, it does not relate to gold at all. (Bien dit, kyra!) Which is why those blue givre beads have no gold in them. Nor do the pink ones.

One thought on the original brooch: does that centre stone feel cold and are you sure it's glass? Faint possibility it's thermoset.

 

I'd have said satin glass on the center cab, but it could be a moonglow glass out to fool us. I'm not seeing plastic.

Moonglow doesn't have the catseye/chatoyant effect in the older pieces. The average bit of catseye glass is newer than the earrings, at least in my experience. Givrè beads are the inverted partners to sabrina stones, and neither has the copper bits in it that aventurine glass or goldstone would.

 

Yup, I've got older moonglow, it doesn't do the catseye thing.

 

Not in my jool biz, not in the jool bizzes I've worked for either. And yes, I have also worked for a jool biz that sold (designer) costume.

Givré is not French for 'with gold in it', btw.

Sadly, though learned in my youth, no longer able to speak it (use it or lose it), though I understand a bit with slow-talkers, and can respond to simple greetings, etc. - and still do okay with the written word (have a limited vocabulary). But due to my interests, I most definitely know French for gold, silver, and other metals...

I was almost bilingual in French at one point. If I go to a Francophone country it comes back to me quite quickly. I learned German, never liked it as much. Self taught Spanish and Catalan, so my grammar is a bit pants in those. I can read some Portuguese and Italian, but if I try to speak, I've a habit of doing Spanitport. Chuck any old Spanish word in. Oops.

 

If I didn't manage in my extremely limited Italian, I always switched to Spanish. The Italians always understood.
Now my Spanish is too rusty, but I still read it and I am sure I would pick it up again if I ever get to a Spanish-speaking environment.

 

My other half throws in words based on Latin.

 

I can still read odds and sods fairly well, but my spoken French is pretty rusty. And the German ... pitiful.
