Only positive age-ification method I know of is qualitative analysis of the brass. If it contains any aluminum at all it was made after about 1900, when recycled aluminum began to show up in all metals that contained scrap content, including brass.

Just about no-one knows beans about old brass candlesticks, so the chances of picking up a pair of fine 18th C sticks for pin money is very good.

Trouble is at present no one cares much about brass candlesticks either, so the chances of selling good early ones for pin money is about the same.

I don't know if it would be worth the trouble in America, but Britain is almost sinking from the weight of brass candlesticks, and someone who put the time and study in could probably accumulate a good collection of early ones for little money, but lots of effort.

Af, I'm not really sure what the trend is right now in the US, but I've relegated all of mine to the attic, at least for now. I can't even say WHY - they just don't appeal right now (and I have an awful lot of them, from very old to c.1970's - both English and American...)

I asked a major auction house to evaluate the candlestick. According to one of their experts it's from "the second half of 19th century" and also not worth much, which really isn't surprising.
