    GaleriaGila Hola, y'all!

    I'll betcha that these little vases were sometimes re-purposed... vase insert to car vase to bud vase to...? That would account for some of the diversity of our experiences, maybe?

    I'm not sure if this is going to work but I'll give it a try. I finally remembered what led me to believe it might be a car vase in the first place. On page 77 of Davis's vaseline glass book it shows an item a lot like mine. The explanation of the item is a bit muddled as you'll see. The vase pictured is a bit different from mine (the one pictured is actually larger and the top is fluted, and, of course, mine isn't vaseline) but it looks pretty close.
    The text reads:
    "A vase, maker unknown, c. 1927. Glickman calls this a car vase on pg. 68 of Yellow-Green Vaseline, revised edition. I have seen it as the center piece of an elaborate Czech lamp. This flared and fluted top car vase with a flower design is 6.75"h x 4.5" d. $175-200. Courtesy of Laura Kelm and Pete Buck."
    Not sure if it helps much but...

    @dgbjwc
    The picture to the left of the vase we are discussing.

    Says "vase unknown 1929 ???" Does it say bud vase? Is it possible they mixed the captions, because that looks like a car vase and not a bud vase.

    Hi cluttered - thanks for the thought but that one is also described as a car vase.

    I think I'm going to see if I can pick up a copy of Glickman on the cheap. The picture in Davis isn't really very good at showing detail. It wouldn't surprise me if this piece was used in multiple ways.

    I do believe we have a winner folks! Thanks much, Brad! I now believe ola402 was correct and the sterling was sold and melted. Now what to do with a vase missing its holder? It does stand nicely on its so maybe there's hope. Thanks each and every one of you!

    Those bases are out there and the size is pretty standard. It shouldn't be too hard to track one down if you wanted to. There are probably far more bases than inserts still around. The glass breaks. Where there's light there's hope.

    Hi,
    If you are near a medical supply house, buy one of their stainless steel holders for cotton tipped applicators. They are the same size.
